About 1000 demonstrators hurled smoke bombs at police and pounded the car carrying the Governor-General, Sir John Kerr, in protest at The Dismissal of Gough Whitlam. Mounted police desperately formed a wedge to protect Kerr as over 400 police struggled to hold the crowd back.
