From the Archives, 1985: McEnroe slams ‘unworthy’ Australian Open surface

John McEnroe attacked Kooyong’s centre court as the worst grass court he had seen and unworthy of Grand Slam status. He also faced fines and a possible suspension after arguing with referee, Peter Bellinger. The Australian Open would move to Melbourne Park, and a different surface, in 1988.
