Exploring the contents of their bookshelf...

*Sons Of Raphael* are a world unto themselves.

The duo's fusion of all-out noise and classic songwriting makes for a bracing live experience, but beneath the pummelling layers of sound lies a beating heart.

Debut album 'Full-Throated Messianic Homage' is out now, with Clash labelling it "a stunning effort"* in our review. *

We caught up with the duo for Their Library, and leafed through the Biblical tomes on Sons Of Raphael's joint bookshelf.

*What is your favourite book and why? *

The Bible - it is the book of all books!

*What other authors do you like? *

Moses and David.

*What draws you to certain books?*

Like a good song, certain books come to you only when the time is right.

*Have you ever discovered a real lost classic? What is it and why? *

The Dead Sea Scrolls - they contain all the answers a man can seek.

*Do your literary influences have a direct impact on your songwriting?*

Yes I believe so, in the same way that the authors of the New Testament were influenced by the Old Testament and the writers of the Old Testament themselves were influenced by Ancient Near Eastern texts - I don't believe that the world was created out nothing, and similarly, a song is not created out of nothing.

*What are you reading at the moment?*

I-Thou.

*What is the first book you remember reading as a child? *

The Jewish-Japanese Sex and Cook Book and How To Raise Wolves.

*Have you ever found a book that you simply couldn't finish?*

The Megillah, it was too long.

*Would you ever re-read the same book?*

Absolutely, exactly as I would re-listen to the same song, I would re-read the same book - a man’s mind is hidden in his writings; you could read a book a thousand times and still know nothing about it.

*Have you ever identified with a character in a book? Which one and why?*

Job, because of his suffering. I too have been tested by God.

*Is there an author / poet you would like to collaborate with?*

If post-mortem existence is a logical concept - the list is endless
