Over 800 illicit migrants saved off Libyan coast last week

(MENAFN) On Monday, May. 3 the International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that over 800 illicit migrants have been saved off the coast of Libya over last week. The organization noted in a report that from April 25 to May 1, "818 migrants were rescued/intercepted at sea and returned to Libya," further saying that 6,992 illicit migrants have been saved and sent back to Libya thus far in 2021, comprising 545 women and 335 minors. The IOM noted that 139 illicit migrants passed away and another 349 were reported missing on the Central Mediterranean route up to now this year. The IOM noted that last year, a number of 11,891 illicit migrants were saved and sent back to Libya, whereas 381 illicit migrants lost their lives and another 597 went missing on the Central Mediterranean route.
