Long recovery for Syria's battle-scarred towns

A ferocious assault on Baghouz on Tuesday (March 12) night.

The U.S. backed Syrian Democratic Forces said the battle for Islamic State's final enclave was now ''as good as over'', after hundreds more jihadists and their families surrendered.

Most of the evacuated civilians have been transported to a camp for internally displaced people in northeastern Syria, leaving Baghouz as yet another war-smashed pocket of the country.

It's near future probably something like this.

Eight years after the civil war began, the eastern Ghouta district of Ein Terma still bears the scars.

Many inhabitants have now moved back to the area, which was controlled by rebels who wanted to bring the ruling government down.

The market is back in action, but jobs are scarce.

Rubble still clogs the streets, and water and electricity supply is only partial.

Samiha Fares fled the fighting in 2012.

But upon her return last year she found her house empty and scorched by fire.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) RESIDENT OF EIN TERMA, SAMIHA FARES, SAYING: "The situation was bad for me.

My children calmed me.

At least our house was still there and we could live in it." While the battle for Islamic State's final stronghold draws to a close.... The people of Baghouz, just like those of Ein Terma, face a long road to recovery.
