Britain has said it's extremely concerned about reports a Foreign Office worker has been detained in China.

Simon Cheng works at the UK consulate in Hong Kong and didn't return to work after visiting the mainland on August 8th.

He's not been in contact since.

That's according to a local news source in Hong Kong, who had spoken to Cheng's girlfriend and family.

In a statement, Britain said it is "seeking further information from authorities in Guangdong Province and Hong Kong." Local police refused to comment and China's foreign ministry spokesman said he had "no grasp" of the situation.

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON, GENG SHUANG, SAYING: "I have no grasp of the relevant situation." Beijing has recently accused Britain and other Western countries of meddling in its internal affairs.

It comes as the territory has been plunged into its most violent crisis since the handover to Chinese rule, as anti-government protests grip the city.
