Dorian strengthens to Category 4 storm and shifts aim

Hurricane Dorian spun across the Atlantic on Saturday as a powerful Category 4 storm but the eye of the hurricane shifted northeast, which could mean less damage along the Florida coast.

Conway G.

Gittens reports.

Hurricane Dorian strengthened on Saturday to a powerful Category 4 storm, while shifting away from taking direct aim at Florida.

But Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned residents not to think they are in the all-clear.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) RON DESANTIS, FLORIDA GOVERNOR, SAYING" "You know a bump in one direction or the other could have really significant ramifications in terms of impact.

If it bumps further east that obviously is positive, if it bumps just a little west then you're looking at really, really, significant impacts." He urged residents to have at least a week's worth of food, water, and medicine on hand.

With little assurance the storm will continue to veer towards the Atlantic and stay out at sea, residents and visitors hunkered down in one of America's most popular tourist destinations.

(SOUNDBITE) (English), BARBARA WALKER, 61-YR-OLD HOUSEWIFE, SAYING: "I guess we're as ready as we'll be.

We got a generator, and our gas and that's all we need." With maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour, Dorian headed towards the caribbean Island of Bahamas on Saturday.

Property there - boarded up.

Evacuation of low-lying areas - ordered.

Island residents - stocked up on food and gas in anticipation.

It was much the same across the Florida coast.

(SOUNDBITE) (English): ALISHA BRACKEN, 28-YEAR-OLD TRAINER, SAYING: "How am I prepared?

Well all our windows are boarded up.

We have water, water for the dogs, food for the kids.

It's pretty chaotic out there.

I'm glad I prepared last weekend." Schools in Broward County - closed to students - as emergency workers prepare buildings as make-shift evacuation centers.

Florida will still be hit by wind and rain if Dorian remains out at sea and there's the possibility it could swerve back towards Florida, poising a risk to millions of residents, as well as tourist attractions at Walt Disney World, NASA launchpads and even President Trump's Mar-a-lago resorts Trump canceled a trip to Poland and was monitoring the situation, writing on Twitter: "It's moving around and very hard to predict, except that it is one of the biggest and strongest (and really wide) that we have seen in decades.

Be safe!" That warning now extends to South Carolina which, if Dorian's current path holds, could suffer a direct hit by early-to-mid next week.
