Two women are in custody Saturday morning after leading police on a car chase through Springfield and into Eugene late Friday night.

Jillian smukler two women are in jail tonight after they led police on a high speed chase that started in springfield and ended near the university of oregon campus.

Kezi 9 news reporter emma jerome spoke with residents nearby who say they never though this would happen in their area.

Emma jerome: "what would have been a normal traffic stop here on gateway in springfield turned into a police pursuit that took officers all the way to the university of oregon's campus."

Police say that late friday night they attempted to pull 25 year old sherri vigil and 38 year old candise hernandez over for a traffic violation on gateway in springfield... that's when they took off "they found their way to coburg road and then down into the campus area and as they got into the campus area ..

The congested campus area you know ziggina and zagging" that's when seargent mike massey with springfield police says policey lost the car assisting officers located the car in an alley off of east 16th near mill street that's when vigil and hernandez jumped out and ran "and then we called over our springfield k9 unit who then tracked their scent to a residence."

Police then found vigil and hernandez hiding in the attic/ vigil is facing charges of attempting to elude police and reckless driving while hernandez is facing charges as a fugitive from utah neighbors in the gateway area where the chase began says they have noticed some close calls but for the most part the area is quiet alex and jailee: "i think i've almost been hit a couple times, but i think it's more because people weren't necessarily paying attention" massey says if someone leads police on a pursuit it is common that they are facing other charges... or have a reason to flea the scene... " a lot of times there's other criminal factors involved that we may or may not know about... stolen goods in the car... the vehicle may be stolen... or they may have committed a serious crime."

Ej: "massey said a lot of factors into whether or not police will pursue including speed and risk factor... reporting in springfield emma jerome kezi 9news."
