Eight passersby including two children were injured by a roadside bomb in southern Thailand.

The device detonated near a public park in Songkhla province, in the troubled south of the country, at around 3pm on Monday (Feb 24).

Police believe the bomb was placed to target a pickup truck carrying Chetsadakorn Sichan, assistant chief of Saba Yoi district.

And three security volunteers.

The truck was driving past the spot when the bomb was detonated.

It blew the vehicle off the road and Chetsadakorn Sichan was injured.

Police said a gunfight then ensued when the alleged attackers opened fire on the truck.

Intelligence officials believe religious insurgents in the area are responsible for the attack.
