The shooting happened early Saturday morning.

Police following a man shot by police following a multi-county chase saturday morning..... thanks for joining us for wtva 9 news at 5 - im tanya carter.

In for craig ford and emily leonard... wtva's chelsea brown is in new albany with more on how the chase started.

It started here on highway 15 south in new albany near the hillcrest church around midnight on friday.

A blue ford ranger pulling a 16 foot trailer pulled up to a driver's license checkpoint.

A check on the driver of the vehicle came back with an outstanding warrant for failing to register as a sex offender from conway arkansas.

Once the driver knew he was going to be arrested, he drove off.

The police chase started in new albany concluded when tupelo police along with lee and union county sheriff departments stopped the suspect on hillside drive near the tupelo children's mansion.

The driver got out of the vehicle with a handgun and ran onto the campus of the children's mansion while on the campus he fired shots towards police.

The driver is identified as 37 year old male, cory lynch.

A tupelo police news release says lynch was shot..

He was transported to north mississippi medical center where he is in stable condition.

The new albany police department has charged lynch with felony fleeing.
