Get Fit Friday 3/13/20 - Cleanliness in the Gym

Beth Jeffers and Whitney Brown from the Fitness Factor in Columbus explain why it's so imperative, especially in today's health climate, to use proper cleaning techniques even at the gym.

Whitney brown: good morning and welcome to get fit friday.

I'm whitney brown here with beth jeffers.

We're at the fitness factor in columbus talking about kind of a hot topic and that is cleanliness and keeping things clean and specifically about doing that in a gym.

We're going to talk about today how you can keep the equipment clean, how you can check in on your gym, your local area, wherever you're working out and make sure that it's staying safe and clean for you.

Beth jeffers: right.

And that's one thing that i think overall a gym can get a bad rap on as far as being a germy place.

And it is.

I mean, there's a lot of people that come in here and we've always had a system here at the fitness factor about cleanliness and our staff.

We take extra precautions and clean our equipment three and four times a day, as well as we offer our members some germicide antibacterial wipes so they can take it on themselves.

Whitney brown: we offer clean towels for them.

We also, like she said, our staff takes care of cleaning everything, but we give our members and our trainers the chance to clean equipment before and after you.

That's a good thing to do is to go ahead and wipe your equipment down before you get on it, wipe it down afterwards, wash your hands before and after coming in a gym.

We also have hand washing stations around the facility where you can get some pumps of some antibacterial spray so that you can make sure that you're clean.

Beth jeffers: right.

And i think that we don't want people to freak out and just ditch their workouts or ditch their gym use just because they're worried about any kind of viral spreading in our community.

I think that if, like whitney said, and you know the cdc, is saying that we need to take precautions and just take responsibility and use these types of things that are offered.

But like whitney said, you do need to check with your own gym.

And if they're not offering some of those things, you might want to make sure that you bring them yourself.

Whitney brown: right.

And it's absolutely okay to ask them what they're doing in terms of cleaning, because you want to stay safe.

But these are also best practices to use all the time, even when there's not things going around.

Cleaning things and keeping things clean should be done at year round, no matter what.

Beth jeffers: right.

And you know the best thing to do is right after you work out, or even two or three times in your workout, go in, wash your hands.

And that's a simple thing.

Every gym's got a locker room and a sink and soap.

Keep your workouts going on during this time and stay safe, and keep those germs off your body.

Whitney brown: we'll see you next week on get fit friday.
