They're calling the movement "headbands for heroes."

News 18's micah upshaw shows us how they're doing it and how you can help too.

Natsound: they're not professional but i'm pretty sure my home-ec teacher would be pretty proud of me right now.

Micah: shelly bays says it all started after seeing a facebook post seeking sewers.

A family friend working in the healthcare field wrote a message asking for someone to make headbands with buttons.

Something they could attach the string of their masks to.

Shelly: they're having to wear their masks for ten to 12 hours a day and it's breaking down the back of their ears.

Cah: that's when bays turned to youtube to learn how to make headbands.

Coincidentally her husband alan had been collecting bandanas for years.

That's what they're using for material.

Alan: i don't wear them no more, in fact, i almost donated them to goodwill last summer but i didn't do it, thank goodness.

Nat pop: alan cutting pattern.

Micah: the couple has a system -- alan cuts the fabric and shelly sews it together and adds the buttons.

It's become therapeutic, especially for alan who's been temporarily laid off during subaru's closure.

Alan: keeping us busy, you know something to do together.

This is my soul mate.

Micah: the couple has more than 65 bandana's and they've already made at least 30 headbands.

They're planning to make more with donated fabric from friends and family.

But they're hoping people in the community step up to make their own masks to donate.

Shelly: there's a lot of people on facebook and on youtube who are putting out patterns and all kinds of helpful tips on how to make things that a lot of people would have available.

Micah: you can find the videos the bays used as a reference on our website wlfi.com.
