The fascinating natural occurrence occurred in in a Kericho, in the highlands west of the Kenyan Rift Valley in east Africa.In the video the seemingly small sinkhole starts by sucking in water from the large puddle before pulling in mud and long grass, then huge chunks of land.Locals can be overheard shouting and laughing in shock and amazement at the scene, on May 1, caused by heavy rain.At least 100 are dead and nearly 2,000 are homeless after heavy rains and thunderstorms led to severe flooding and landslides across Kenya.Geography teacher Dicken Muchena, 27, who shoot the footage, said: "I think along the rift valley, a lot of activities are taking place covertly."If research by humans can not reveal that, other natural forces will reveal that to us just like this one."The Rift Valley being a tectonic active zone, there are various cracks, holes and underground voids."Following heavy rains in the regions, the overlying soil was eroded exposing the cracks and voids underground."This caused the runoff water to sip in through the openings to fill up the spaces."The East African Great Rift Valley is a series of geological trenches spanning approximately 6,000 kilometres along the divergent tectonic plate boundary.It is in the process of splitting the African Plate into two separate plates, referred to as the Nubian Plate and the Somali Plate.Because it is an active tectonic zone, it features various cracks, holes and underground voids. Following heavy rains in the regions, the overlying soil was eroded exposing the cracks and underground voids.This caused the runoff water to sip in through the openings to fill up the spaces.
