Good evening-- i'm kristen copeland.

The rome branch of the naacp wants to hear how the city's police department feels about the death of george floyd, in minneapolis.......and they want to hear it, out loud.

But the branch president says, so far, all they've got, is silence.

Newschannel 2's joleen ferris spoke with both.

There are many loud voices, denouncing what happened to george floyd at police hands in minneapolis.

According to the rome branch of the naacp....a very important voice is missing from that chorus .

None .

None 49 "our concern is with all that's going on all around us in the country and the tragedy that just happened, we'd like to hear from the rome police department."

Stand up we spoke to rome's police chief by phone 7:45 "we obviously do not condone the behavour of that officer from waht i've seen.

I think it's a terrible tragic thing that happened" 8:00 watching the video myself it really saddened me to see not only the action fo the officer but the officers standing by that didn't take action to stop the officer" president nelson, of the naacp rome branch, says not conding it is one thing; publicly denouncing it is another :55 "every other police department are making statements, the utica police department did and stuff and we'd like the rome police department to speak out against hte violence and the unfair treatment of minorities within law enforcement" 1:15 chief beach says he'll consider a public statement.

A sad development from the naacp.....a departure from the kind of activism that's helped define them for decades.

Due to the covid-19 pandemic....no more outdoor, public marches, ralleys and protests.....for now.

2:53 "we are a small branch and the majority of our members are all seniors" but they're planning a june 8th zoom meeting and have invited law enforcement and other community members 6:06 "the important thing is to do something" jf, nc2.
