Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a video conference with Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh on August 11. The review meeting was conducted to discuss corona related situation. During his address, PM said, "The average fatality rate has been continuously decreasing while the recovery rate is increasing every day, this shows that measures being taken by us are in the right direction." "Experts are saying now that if within 72 hours, a person is diagnosed, then the spread can be controlled to a great extent. So, it is important that all the people who come in contact with an infected person must be tested within 72 hours," he added.
A girl from Dadri lost her life in a road accident in Aurangabad town of Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr on August 10. Sudiksha Bhati was studying at a college in the USA. Police has registered the case and trying to nab the accused. While speaking to ANI, uncle of the victim Sathendra Bhati (with whom she was travelling during the accident) said, "On the way, a bullet overtook us several times, I lowered the speed of my bike. The bullet rider then went ahead and stopped." "I suddenly lost control and hit the bike. My niece was hurt," he added. Another relative, Omkaar Bhati said, "She was going to her maternal uncle's home with her paternal uncle on a bike. Two boys came on a bullet and they were passing comments while following Sudeeksha. They (bikers) overtake and suddenly pulled the emergency brake and an accident occurred. Sudeeksha died on the spot. She was district topper and she was studying in the US." Speaking to media, the additional SP of Bulandshahr, Atul Kumar Srivastava said, "The case has been registered and we trying to nab the accused. Further probe is underway."
While addressing a press conference in Lucknow on August 10, the Principal Secretary (Health) in Uttar Pradesh government, Amit Mohan Prasad said, "Out of total 47, 878 active cases in UP, around 19,635 patients are in home isolation." "Around 32,774 people have undergone in home isolation in the state till date," Principal Secretary (Health) added.
Delhi police stepped up security in and around the capital ahead of the Independence day celebration on August 15. Police were seen checking vehicles in the India gate and Connaught place region. Similar checks are also underway in other regions of the capital. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Indian Armed Forces (Tri-Service) Band gave a musical performance at the North Block. The Defence Ministry has said that the Independence Day event will be marked by musical performances by the bands from the Army, Navy and the Indian Air Force. 'These performances are intended as gestures of gratitude and appreciation of the nation towards the Corona warriors who have been steadfastly fighting to stop the spread of the Coronavirus in the country even at the risk of their lives,' said the Ministry of Defence in a press statement. Military and Police Bands will also perform in Imphal, Bhopal and Jhansi on August 12. A reward carrying criminal was shot dead in an encounter with police in Lucknow on August 09. Lucknow SSP (STF) Sudhir Kumar Singh said, "As you can see the car hit the tree here. There were five miscreants and because the car hit the tree they started firing and in the cross firing, one criminal was shot and was taken to the hospital. He is a shooter of Mukhtar Ansari gang and he had a bounty of Rs 25,000 from many places. He was brought dead at the hospital."
Gymnast Dipa Karmakar resumed training after more than five months. Karmakar was on a break due to the raging Covid-19 pandemic. The athlete was back in gym to enhance her gymnastic skills. Karmakar was seen flexing muscles to get back in action. "I am feeling glad that after over five months I came to the gym. All the gyms were shut due to coronavirus pandemic in March. I thank Tripura Sports Council for giving me training opportunity. We were undergoing online fitness training all this while," Gymnast Dipa Karmakar said. The gymnast resumed training under supervision of her coach BS Nandi. "I started giving online classes during the lockdown. As of now, the aim is to get these players back in their form," Dipa Karmakar's coach, BS Nandi said. The Coronavirus pandemic took a toll on sports activities across the world. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics was also postponed until next year. The event has been scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
