Monroe County schools adjust to new normal as students return to school despite coronavirus pandemic.

Going..

Yes, im here outside of smithville high school where there is a new normal for all students and staff as they try to get through this school year safely despite coronavirus... ."

"we don't have everything figured out and the sad truth about is a month from now we won't have everything figured out."

Smithville attendance center principle chad o'brian says safety procedures throughout the school day are a work in progress.

With only about 40 students opting for virtual learning close to 500 students are on campus everyday.

Because of this there is a new normal for everyone on campus.

"where as in the past when the bell rings everyone would go to lunch, well that doesn't happen this year."

Instead, according to o'brian only about 70 students can eat at one time in the cafeteria and remain socially distance this forcing a number of students to eat inside the classroom, alternating every other week medical professionals are also on campus for students that may need assistance "we have a registered nurse that's here every day but we also have an fnp that's here two days a week."

((stand up)) in the event that a student starts to show symptoms while on campus they are brought to this room, isolated from all other students until their parents come to pick them up this isolation room along with every other classroom is cleaned daily some hourly "we have a sanitizing station where teachers can fill their own bottle."

A formula principle obrian says kills 99 percent of germs on contact.
