Typhoon Bavi batters Japan with strong waves

Strong waves from Typhoon Bavi smash into the coast of Hetono in Kagoshima prefecture, Japan today (August 25).

The country's Meteorological Agency said Typhoon Bavi was packing winds of of up to 144 km per hour as it turned north towards the Korean Peninsula.

Bavi’s life began as a tropical depression on August 21 around 350 nautical miles from Kadena Air Base on Okinawa Island.

It then strengthened into a tropical storm.
