The new york state public high school athletic association announced it has postponed the high- risk fall sports of football - volleyball and competitive cheer to a second fall season starting on march 1st, 2021.

Those sports were initially slated to practice but not yet be allowed to play when the fall season begins on september 21.

Low to moderate- risk sports will still be allowed to play beginning on the 21st.

The sports being moved to the "fall two" season will not be able to officially practice beginning in september - but can participate in offseason workout activities as allowed under current state guidance.

The association also announced that spring sports would be delayed until april 19th to allow for the fall two season to complete with a small overlap.

Student-athletes will be able to participate in both a fall two and spring sport.

Officials from nysphsaa say that with uncertainty over game play and logistical concerns for schools holding all sports at once - this option best allows for an adequate athletic experience.

Robert zayas: we didn't have a definitive timeline when high-risk fl spos would be allowed play...consideng how ny challeng and obacles our sools arefaced withd that he knows not everyone will agree with this decision - but that it came about after a listening to concerns from over 500 athletic directors around the state regarding high-risk fall sports.

On a positive note - this decision frees up a unique opportunity for a student-athlete to potentially play an extra sport...one playing soccer in the fall could now theoretically play football in the spring.

Plenty more information about this decision will be available at wktv.com.
