Remsen, Waterville decide to delay fall sports indefinitely

Pair of school districts join Cooperstown in electing not to hold fall sports beginning in September.

Unlike Cooperstown, these schools do not close door on playing at some point.

Would support any school district that decided not to move forward with its fall sports seasons.

This afternoon - remsen and waterville school districts announced that they will delay competition.

Remsen has postponed its athletics until further notice.

Superintendent timothy jenny sent out a letter to families today that said social distancing guidelines - difficulties expecting all student-athletes to tolerate wearing masks during competition - and financial reasons all contributed to the decision.

Schools are receiving potentially 20% less aid from the state this academic year due to the pandemic - leaving remsen with over 1.46 million dollars less in aid than last school year.

The letter said that athletic season expenses - staffing at events - and spectator cleaning procedures all make it cost prohibitive to be able to pull off.

The school said until the state health and eduction departments allow for a safe implementation of 100% in person attendance - it will not envision having athletic seasons.

Waterville echoed those exact sentiments regarding financial reductions - saying that they will re- evaluate its team's athletic seasons by january first.

It's letter from interim superintended doctor kathleen davis said that the additional time would allow for them to further monitor transportation and capacity to transport students for athletics.

These schools become the third in our viewing area - joining cooperstown in putting off sports.
