Schools are dealing with a lot during the pandemic.

Now there's another problem.

Districts are having a hard time finding substitute teachers.

News 18's dakota simon tells us how schools are dealing with the shortage this fall semester..

<dakota -- school districts all over are now looking for substitute teaching.

The lafayette school corporation needs substitutes from the elementary school level all the way up here to tecumseh junior high, and lafayette jeff high school.

And this is a problem all over the area school corporations continue to add to their substitute teaching pools.

Superintendent les huddle says the substitute teaching enrollment is down 50 percent..

The shortage isn't speficic to lsc..

The tippecanoe school corporation is seeing a shortage around 30 percent of total subsitutues available..

School leaders across the area are tapping into one major local resource for this school year..

Les-- we are lucky to be in a university community.

And sometimes we are able to draw from the university population, but again because of covid that has knocked our numbers down also.

Doug -- we have a very strong relationship with purdue and the teacher ed program, we have started a residency program, and we are part of that.

I know klondike elementary is part of that and we do utilize those students as subs in our buildings.

Dakota -- again school officials saying it's more important now than ever to build up their substitute teaching pools as they continue to navigate through this pandemic..
