"i feel like it took a little bit for it to really sit in, you know, that something i helped create is going, you know, miles up onto a space station, like that's pretty insane."

"to think that i am going to be able to create something that will go to space, the very place that i've been looking, as inspiration, my entire life, is simply increasable."

It all started as a competition powered by higher orbits.

"it's fun for us to have a winning team come from lexington, ky, which is where space tango is because we are always thrilled to highlight the fact that aerospace is actually the largest export from the state of kentucky."

Space tango engineered this cube-shaped lab which will house termites.

Students will monitor the termites from space, here on earth, observing the effects of microgravity on the insects.

"termites have never been to space before, which is part of the reason why we did this project."

The termites will live aboard the international space station for about thirty days.

"every one of the students who's had their experiment flown to space talks about how much this changed how they saw the world in a bigger picture, how they saw stem differently, how they saw team work differently."

Basically, an unforgettable, out-of-this-world, experience.

In lexington, i'm jason lindsey.

The termites launch from nasa's wallops flight facility, in virginia, this evening at 9:38 pm.
