Today Dr. Emerson takes a look at Gary, who has entropion, today on sunrise.

Good morning sunrisers.

I'm dr. karen emerson, and today i have with me my kennel manager david, and this cute adorable boy is gary.

He is a mastiff mix and he's 13 months old.

So he is quite large.

He actually, since he was a puppy, had issues with his eyes.

He had a disease called ectropion, and all that meant was that his eyelids actually rolled in on top of each other.

So imagine if you've ever gotten an eyelash in your eye, how irritated your eye feels.

Well, that's what was happening to him.

His eyelashes were rubbing the top and bottom.

So he was getting chronic eye infections.

It was very painful.

Dr. karen emerson: so we let him get a little bit larger, and i talked to his mom and dad about doing the ectropion surgery.

A lot of veterinarians don't do that surgery.

I'm specially trained in it.

I'm actually going to get to show you what gary looked like before the surgery and how he looked after the surgery, how his eyes are.

He can see.

He's not having any irritation.

He's doing wonderful.

One of the things that happened with poor gary is after he went home after surgery, he was bitten by a snake and had to come back in hospital.

Luckily he had had his first rattlesnake vaccine, so he recovered from that.

So gary has been through a lot of stuff and he is a trooper.

Dr. karen emerson: if you have a dog that's constantly having eye infections or they're constantly rubbing their eyes, or they constantly have a lot of irritation coming out of their eyes like a green material, or you notice them rubbing their face on the carpet, that is totally not normal.

And that is actually a disease they can be born with.

It can be surgically corrected.

So if you have a dog that's like gary, give us a call and make an appointment.

Let's do that exam and find out if we can help them.

And i promise your pets will thank you.
