For 37 years, people in rochester have earned the "mayor's medal of honor" awards.
Where they're recognized for going above and beyond.
Kimt news 3's madelyne watkins explains how like many things, the nomination process has changed a bit this year.
She joins us live now.
Good morning, madelyne./// brooke and tyler.
We are in a year of a global pandemic... so people working behind the doors here at mayo clinic have been described as heroes.
I spoke with mayor kim norton and she has no doubt doctors and nurses will be nominated this year.
There are 14 different categories.
Some of those include the artistic or cultural achievement award, the champion of diversity award, heroism award and the mayor's award.
Last year's winners will primarily choose the recipients this year.
Mayor kim norton tells me while health officials will be at the forefront of a lot of people's minds this year... the nominations will most likely extend to those from all kinds of "i suspect those industries that have helped others and helped their employees will be nominated, i'm quite sure that's true.
The difficult will be from these wonderful award nominees, how do we pick the person that will ultimately get the award?
I think that this year, that will probably be more of a challenge because we feel so grateful to so many people in this community for all they've done."
Normally, they have a ceremony with a dinner to celebrate the winners and surprise them since they don't announce who wins before then.
This year of course, mayor norton tells me they'll have to think of something creative for the celebration.
And whatever they come up with will happen sometime between thanksgiving and the first of the year.
