Do not go trick-or-treating this year, that's the strong recommendation released Tuesday by the California Department of Public Health.

Do not go trick or treating this year.

That's the strong recommendation today released by the california department of public health.

.in fact, the statement from health officials says: "to protect yourself and your community, you should not go trick-or- treating or mix with others except for allowed private gatherings this halloween season."

Action news now reporter esteban reynoso is live in chico with reaction to the guidance.

Halloween is just around the corner as you can see with some of the decorations behind me, i spoke with people in the community who will be following the state's recommendation s, and others who are ignoring them.

In a letter to all californians, the state issued recommended halloween guidelines stating -- some of the traditional holiday activities promote congregating and mixing of households for this reason, c-d-p-h recommends that you choose a safer alternative way to celebrate halloween, and strongly discourages trick-or- treating.

"i would love to go trick-or- treating but if it's not safe, why should we do it.

We're just going to play it safe and stay at home and probably just like do a cosplay or something just to stay in the spirit of halloween."

"i don't want to risk trying to get corona."

Others are not taking the full recommendation "i am taking my daughter trick- or-treating."

But will continue the halloween tradition, just slightly limited.

"there is a little bit of a scare but you know i mean she's young so she won't be out for that long.

She's probably only gonna do a couple houses."

However there are some that will still keep their door open come halloween night.

"if i have candy i'm gonna hand it out.

I think it's a little ridiculous they don't want people to go trick-or- treating."

One of the safer alternatives the state recommends is having a scary movie night, and carving pumpkins at home.
