Earlier this week amazon prime day kicked off deals for online shoppers.

At 5 we told you with more people online....more scammers will pop up too.

News 10's richard solomon joins us now live in the newsroom with advice from a consumer expert on how to dodge the thieves.

Amazon prime day kicked off the shopping holiday.

Experts say more people will be using this...to check out rather than shopping bags.

But experts say online shopping also opens to door to more scammers.

Getting to the stores early..just to get the early doorbusters.

But this year...some are opting out of all the hustle and bustle "if you wanted to get your shopping done early you could just do it now while everybody's staying at home i think it's a lot easier" "more accessable to get your stuff a lot quicker than it is when you wait around.

It's safer because you're not really around anybody that you're not sure of if they have the virus or not" consumer expert tim maniscalo says more people will spend the shopping season on the couch.

Covid-19 has caused stores to push their holiday deals online much sooner.

But maniscalo also says it's an opportune time for unwanted guests.

"what covid-19 has done is created the perfect storm for scammers" the best ways to keep the shopping scrooges at bay...are to use a credit card when making online purchases...or and make sure your web browser is secured.

"on the url look for the letters https.

S is the important word there and also look for the locked icon those 2 give you some added secutiry" and keep in mind...with more online shopping...it could take longer for your items to ship.

But some aren't worried.

They say a warm couch..beats long lines any day.
