New spectator policies at local school districts causing confusion amid fall sports season

After two full weeks of game play, school districts are altering their spectator policies, no longer allowing any fans in attendance.

- it appears many school districts in our area have new coronavirus policies that are crei a bit of consion for parents and student-athletes.

Here's what we know at this moment.

Uponarrd away and told that spectators - media included - are no longer allowed to attend.

The bleachers empty while oys soccer game is being played.

This hasn't been an issues up to this point - and i've since heard...but not yet confirmed...that many school districts in the area are adopting a similar plan.

Some schools have cited that this guidance is coming from oneida county - and that the limit of gatherings of 50 people includes those on the field.

We reached out to oneida county executive anthony picente for clarification tonight and he said - the county has enacted no new guidelines of its own furthering limitations at sporting events - and are going by guidance previously set forth by the state.

Picente told newschannel two... "the state of new york is, and has been since the beginning of this pandemic, the only government that sets capacity limits for public gatherings.

The governor's executive orders clrlydetail th0 people can attend a public gathering, furthermore the executive orders make clear that local county governments must enforce these orders... ((change)) ...oneida county continues to enforce these orders to the best of our ability.

My only goal is to mitigate the spread of the virus so people don'get sickandp this community open."

The previous state guidance at sporting events calls for no more than two spectators per student-athlete - and a limit to 50% of the maximum capacity of the host venue with proper social distancing protocols in place.

I have reached out to school athletic directors -and e athletic officials for further comment and am currently awaiting a response.

I will continue to remain on this story and provide further updates as more information becomes available.
