U.s. highway 20 is now safe to drive on again!

That's after crews spent this morning cleaning up scrap metal debris like this from the eastbound lanes of the road.

Scrap metal was reported along highway 20 from colbert county all the way through morgan county.

Several drivers along the route reported getting flat tires because of the metal.

But it looked a lot different this morning - when crews with the alabama department of transportation were out here picking up scrap metal.

Take a look at this video - workers picked up pieces of metal by hand.

They also used a magnet to speed up the clean-up process.

In total - 55 al-dot employees plus some contractors were part of the effort.

I talked to several drivers today who said you couldn't see the metal from the road.

A lot of people drove over it - causing flat tires.

I talked with one man who said he was on his way to madison from florence when he came across the scrap metal.

You really couldn't see anything until after you hit it and then after you hit it, i was lucky enough that the metal i hit stayed in my tire so i could make it to the store.

Some people it just shredded their tired up.

Crews are checking areas of western colbert county for any debris.
