The Game Change: Choral Ensemble
The Game Change: Choral Ensemble

Choral ensembles generally perform indoors, which means that the Coronavirus can spread relatively easily so they had to make some really big adjustments this year in order to make their performances happen.

Election, wtva's matt st.

Jean is bringing some melody to the evening in this week's game change.

They generally perform indoors, which means that the coronavirus can spread relatively easily so they had to make some really big adjustments this year in order to make their performances happen, i'm talking about choral ensemble and boy do they sound good, check this out, one, two, three.

Ensemble sings this is the game change.

This is the game change.

(nat music plays underneath the whole time) (katylan fulgham) it's the moment that we're all making music and it actually sound lovely and we're all just listening to each other and we just get emotional all together because we made this all together.

(track) katyland fulgham is a senior member of the starkville high school chamber singers.

Adjusting to the pandemic required the group to make major changes to its daily activities.

The choir room is too small to accommodate the ensemble, so they practice in the cafeteria.

And according to junior cooper snell, it isn't quite the same.

(cooper) it had the effects of being in the choir room, but now we're in the cafeteria, which is a very different feeling than being in the choir room.

(track) singers are required to wear their masks at all times, yes even when they're singing.

(katylan) singing with a mask on, it's so difficult, breathing?

You thought you could breathe in choir?

Breathing with these masks?

Oh my goodness, no no no no."

(track) on a normal year, the chamber singers travel around and play in front of a variety of audiences, this year, nearly everything has been canceled or done virtually.

(jordan dobbins) we've been at school every day this year which is kind of funny to say but for choir we do a lot of trips and do a lot of extra things and so doing it all virtually or not at all has been tough.

(track) especially tough for the senior members.

(katylan) it's the feeling that you know some seniors and stuff like that they can't be eligible to like to go on their competitions and stuff this is their last year and how do you feel about telling the seniors that on their last year their not eligible to compete in something they love doing.

(track) all-state auditions were moved to virtual.

The state competition in the spring has already been moved to virtual.

(katylan) you don't get the same experience of traveling up there looking at music, getting stressed out and everything, it's not that same feeling anymore oh well i just submitted it let's call it a day.

(cooper) it's a little bit sad but you know it's still, we're just trying to make the best of it i guess, trying to sing because that's what we do.

(track) the starkville high school singers are trying to put a concert on for its choirs in december.

Until then, the chamber singers will continue to make sweet, sweet sounds because as cooper so aptly put (nat) it's what they do.
