Death of a tenant.

29-year-old deron keaton was found stabbed to death in his apartment early monday.

Lafayette police are still looking for a suspect tonight.

News 18's micah upshaw joins us live there now.

Micah what are neighbors saying?

Despite the number of 9-1-1 calls about criminal activity in this area -- neighbors say it's typically quiet.

That's why this killing came as a shock to them.

S: it be kids out here and hearing stuff like that it's just very, very devastating.

M: cambridge estates apartments in lafayette has made the news a few times this year.

In january there was an arrest for a stabbing.

In february three men were arrested for a shooting that left the victim with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Then in april, there were two reports of shots fired within days of one another.

Now in november a fatal stabbing.

N: i've been here for 13 years and haven't had much of a problem.

It's upsetting but very unusual.

M: police say this stabbing was an isolated incident and the suspect is believed to have known keaton.

On average this complex brings in around 65 crime- related calls a month.

But lpd sergeant ian o'shield's believes those numbers reflect what happens in a densely-populated complex rather than a crime-ridden community.

I: with more people you're likely to have potential for more calls.

Most people if they are law abiding citizens, and they're surrounding themselves with good people who are not committing crimes then more than likely they're not going to be a victim of a crime.

M: he says their data shows that this is the first killing at the complex in well over 20 years.

Neighbors are calling for peace.

V: we supposed to come together, like for real, we supposed to come together with a peaceful mindset, not killing each other.

M: and others are staying hopeful for better neighbors moving forward.

N: i see them come and go and there's all kinds of characters and you hope to get next to ones that you can live with and amongst.

This incident is still under investigation.

Police are asking people who may know the suspect to reach out to their we-tip hot- line.
