This week, affordable 'true mpg' heroes - cars that regularly match or even overachieve their efficiency claims under real-world driving conditions:

Unlike the previous Yaris, you can actually throw this one at a series of bends and be entertained by its respectable levels of grip and responsive handling. Sure, a Fiesta is still more fun, but then it can’t achieve the 59.9Ωmpg the Yaris manages.

Just pipped to the economy honours is the Ignis. Its lightweight construction helps in the economy stakes because while it may be badged as a hybrid, it can’t run on electric power alone like the Toyota. Still, 59.9mpg is a mighty feat.
