After a payment pause that has lasted more than three years, more than 40 million student loan borrowers will be on the hook for payments starting in the fall. Many of those borrowers hoped their debt would be reduced or wiped out entirely under President Joe Biden’s forgiveness plan, which the Supreme Court struck down on Friday. Among the most vulnerable borrowers are those who finished college during the pandemic. Millions have never had to make a loan payment. Advocates fear it will add a financial burden that younger borrowers can’t afford.
