Biden announces more Iran sanctions on anniversary of Mahsa Amini death

On the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death, President Joe Biden has announced that the U.S. will impose more sanctions on Iranian people and firms, “targeting some of Iran’s most egregious human rights abusers.” Amini had been detained last September by Iran's morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab too loosely in violation of laws demanding women in public wear the Islamic headscarf. The 22-year-old died three days later in police custody. Authorities said she had a heart attack but hadn’t been harmed. Her family has disputed that, leading to public protests that spread across the country for months.
