(MENAFN - Jordan News Agency) Brussels, Apr. 20 (Petra) -- The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and the EORTC Cancer Research Fund (ECRF) are pleased to announce the appointment of Her Highness Princess Dina Mired as the next Honorary President.Princess Dina Mired succeeds HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco who has held the Presidency since 2014, during which significant strides were made to advance EORTC's mission of improving survival rates and the quality of life for cancer patients. Since 1962, the EORTC has continuously contributed to delivering advancements to cancer patient treatment through multidisciplinary clinical research, which covers various types of tumours, at an international level via its network of partnerships.ECRF's Chairman Count Diego du Monceau commented, "I would like to thank HRH Prince Albert II of Monaco for his invaluable help and support to EORTC's mission over the years and extend a warm welcome to Her Highness Princess Dina Mired in her newly appointed role. We are honoured by her acceptance and we look forward to working together to further advance EORTC's impact on cancer patients around the world".Princess Dina Mired is a well known global advocate for cancer control and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Testament to her outstanding leadership, she presided over the largest global union for International Cancer Control (UICC) having been the first Arab to have been elected to such a prestigious global post. She led the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) in Jordan as Director General for fifteen years, transforming the non-profit into an internationally renowned brand and leader in the global movement for people affected by cancer.As a leading advocate for early detection and screening of breast cancer for women in Jordan, Princess Dina was the founder and Honorary Chairperson of the Jordan Breast Cancer Program 2006-2016. In 2011, Her Highness was honoured to deliver the keynote speech on behalf of civil society at the first ever United Nations High-level Meeting on NCDs.And again in September of 2018, Princess Dina addressed the third high level meeting on NCDs as an "eminent champion of the fight against NCDs" Commenting on her appointment, HRH Princess Dina said, "It is truly a great honour to take up the mantle from HSH Prince Albert II to become the next Honorary President of EORTC. At a time when commercial interests are overriding public health agendas all over the world, it is very important to support organizations such as EORTC, which maintain the highest ethical standards in research and are exclusively focused on the wellbeing of patients. I will endeavour to put my utmost in moving forward this organization's great work and scientific achievements, not only in Europe but also in the developing world.""There has been tremendous scientific progress over the years, nevertheless, several challenges remain and need to be addressed if we are to effectively tackle the burden of this disease.
