Minnesota’s Kenta Maeda took a no-hit bid into the ninth inning with a 3-0 lead over the Milwaukee Brewers, but it took until the 12th inning for the host Twins to pull out the win, 4-3.

Jorge Polanco reached on an infield single in the inning to score Byron Buxton from third. Buxton had started the inning at second and advanced to third on Alex Avila’s groundout before Max Kepler was hit by a pitch.

Maeda lost his no-hit bid when Eric Sogard led off the ninth inning with a soft single to center field.

The ball fell just beyond the reach of leaping shortstop Jorge Polanco, and Maeda bent at the waist and grinned as he watched the ball bounce in the outfield.

Maeda then was lifted for Trevor Rogers before the Brewers went on to tie the game 3-3 on Keston Hiura’s RBI single and an error by second baseman Ildemaro Vargas that scored two runs.

Maeda’s bid included a club-record eight consecutive strikeouts, and Sogard’s hit came on Maeda’s 115th pitch of the night, the most thrown by a pitcher in a game during this pandemic-shortened season.

Maeda finished with two walks and 12 strikeouts. His previous high for pitches this season was 84.
