There's about to be a major shake-up announced involving ambulance and paramedic service that would affect many in siouxland.
And we have the exclusive details for you tonight -- "only on 9."
Kcau 9 news has learned that siouxland paramedics inc.
Will cease to exist come the end of the of the year.
An official announcement to that effect is expected tomorrow morning.
On-going financial problems are apparently at the center of the shakeup.
Contacted tonight by kcau 9 news, karen van de steeg, the executive director of health inc., which oversees siouxland paramedics, would only say that tomorrow's announcment would outline a quote "transition".
Additionally we're told that the city of sioux city is expected to take over handling 9-1-1 medical calls within the city.
Ambulance service will likely dispatch from city fire stations, with "non-fire rescue" personel operating the service.
But sioux city isn't expected to handle ambulance runs to other communities or provide hospital transfers.
Currently, siouxland paramedics is the sole 9-1-1 ambulance provider for sioux city, north sioux city and western plymouth county... and employs 45 full-time and part-time paramedics.
It's estimated that s-p-i handles about 10-thousand patients each year.
