Rap scores a breakthrough at the Grammy awards

Country star Kacey Musgraves grabbed top prize at the Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 10), her album Golden Hour won best of the year.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SINGER, KACEY MUSGRAVES, SAYING: "I don't even know what to say." America's top music awards have been dogged by criticism for shutting out hip hop and women.

But this time around, it seemed like organizers went the extra mile to acknowledge both, starting with a surprise appearance by former first lady Michelle Obama.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA, SAYING: (WITH AUDIENCE SHOTS) 'From the Motown records I wore out on the southside to the 'Who Run the World' songs that fuelled me through this last decade, music has always helped me tell my story." Rapper Childish Gambino made history with his track 'This is America' scooping up FOUR Grammy awards including Record and Song of the Year.

That's a first-ever for hip hop at the Grammys.

However, he wasn't actually at the ceremony in Los Angeles to receive the award, sitting it out in apparent protest along with Kendrick Lamar and Jay-Z Other big winners include Lady Gaga who walked away with three Grammys, including two for her hit song "Shallow" from the movie "A Star is Born." Superstar Cardi B grabbed best rap album for "Invasion of Privacy", the first women to win it as a solo artist.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) RAPPER, CARDI B, SAYING: "The nerves are so bad.

Maybe I need to start smoking weed." In keeping with the theme, the stage was dominated by women throughout the night - from a sultry performance by Cardi B to a trip down memory lane with Dolly Parton.
