Freedom farm: disabled animals get refuge in Israel

An Israeli sanctuary is giving disabled animals a new lease of life.

From blind goats to cows with prosthetic legs, the sanctuary's owners hope not only to give the animals refuge, but also visitors to the farm's educational centre.

Freedom farm: disabled animals get refuge in Israel

Welcome to Freedom Farm: a home for three-legged donkeys, blind goats and dozens of animals saved from the slaughterhouse.

The farm's founders opened this sanctuary 50 kilometres north of Tel Aviv to take in disabled and rescued animals - like Gary, who's been fitted with braces to support his deformed legs.

But they're not just looking after the animals here they want to educate visitors about animal rights and a vegan lifestyle.

They also want to help take away the stigma children with disabilities might feel.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) MEITAL BEN ARI, CO-FOUNDER OF FREEDOM FARM, SAYING: "When a child sees an animal here who is handicap or who is blind or who has a prosthetic leg and can't walk without it or has a wheelchair, then he feels that he is the same, he's good and he can be like all the other kids like here." Most of the nearly 240 animals at the farm were raised for slaughter and either donated by farmers or abandoned.

Like five-old-month Nir - the farm's latest arrival - who's fitted with a prosthetic limb received through an online crowd-funding campaign after her leg was broken and amputated.

Running the sanctuary costs about a million dollars a year, and relies on donations and volunteers to keep it going.
