Over the recent days more than a million ordinary Hong Kongers swarmed the streets of the city and shut the government down in stiffer-than-expected resistance to the growing power of China's Communist Party.

Business Insider reports that this is a stinging blow to Chinese President Xi Jinping, who enjoys absolute power on the mainland, but not in China's more far-flung provinces.
