It was supposed to be a day of grieving, with the U.S. President visiting two cities devastated by mass shootings.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "We met with numerous people and we met with also the doctors, the nurses, the medical staff.

They have done an incredible job, both places just incredible." But on a day intended for healing, President Trump took a partisan tone - slamming Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley and Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown - both Democrats.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "They shouldn't be politicking today.

I had it with Sherrod Brown.

He and the Mayor Nan Whaley.

In a news conference soon after Trump departed Dayton, Senator Brown said Trump was well-received by patients.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) U.S. SENATOR SHERROD BROWN OF OHIO SAYING: "He was comforting, he did the right thing.

Melania did the right thing.

It's his job in part to comfort people." But as Trump headed for El Paso- he accused the Ohio leaders in a tweet of misrepresenting his Hospital visit.

And reiterated that while speaking to reporters in El Paso.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: I get on Air Force One where they do have a lot of televisions.

I turn on the television and there they are saying 'well, I don't know if it was appropriate for the president to be here.

Etcetera etcetera." (UPSOUND) Like in Dayton, The President in El Paso was also met by protesters.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) UNIDENTIFIED PROTESTER SAYING: "I find it hypocritical that our President comes in here to basically play the part of him being a sympathizer when in reality it's been in his rallies that he has painted us as an unsafe city." And at the site of a memorial - honoring the 22 killed by a gunman at a Walmart, after apparently posting a 4-page anti-immigrant manifesto - pain turned to anger.

(NATS - CLASHES) Later on - Presidential Candidate and El Paso native, Beto O'Rourke visited the memorial and made it clear Trump was not welcome.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) U.S. PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BETO O'ROURKE SAYING: "To have been so regularly attacked and vilified and demonized by this president, for his to have created the conditions that made an attack like this possible and ultimately likely it's very insulting to us & that he was here." Meanwhile a development in the investigation, CNN reported on Wednesday that the mother of the 21-year-old arrested in the El Paso shooting had called police weeks earlier out of concern that her son had a rifle.
