Islamic State confirmed on Thursday that its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead.
U.S. forces in northwestern Syria killed al-Baghdadi in a weekend raid.
In response, Islamic State vowed revenge against the United States.
Baghdadi was an Iraqi jihadist who rose from obscurity to become the head of the ultra-hardline group.
According to Reuters, he declared himself “caliph” of all Muslims. Al-Baghdadi and two young children died during the swoop by U.S. special forces.
