"catholic churches" in the hoosier state have taken "a major step today" in co-vid-19 protections.

News 10's "jon swaner" went "to saint benedict church" to help explain "the announcement" //// tuesday's daily mass here at st.

Benedict will be the last mass here for the foreseeable future.

The covid-19 pandemic convinced the catholic bishops of indiana to suspend all sunday and weekday masses.

This begins tomorrow.

Previously, the archbishop of indianapolis had relieved a catholic's obligation to attend sunday mass.

We spoke with father martin day, the pastor of st.

Ben's about today's big decision.

Fr.

Martin - "trying to put it into some kind of context is hard, because it's never happened for as long as i've been around."

Jon - "it's an unprecedented move by the church to do this."

Fr.

Martin - "as far as i know... maybe in wartime, but i can't think of any occasion this has ever happened before."

For many catholics who are used to attending mass every sunday, missing mass is going to be hard for them.

For those catholics who want to try and meet your sunday mass obligation anyway, we've posted resources and links for you from fr.

Martin as well as fr.

Dan bedel of st patrick and st.

Margaret mary parishes.

Those resources are on wthi-tv dot com.

From outside st.

Ben's in terre haute, i'm news 10's jon swaner, back to you.
