Greenhill Humane Society sees notable uptick in adoption interest

Greenhill Humane Society has seen an uptick in those willing to adopt or foster animals during this time.

Our team coverage on the coronavirus.

Animal shelters across the country are emptying amid the coronavirus pandemic...including right here at home.

While shelters are thrilled that their furry friends are finding homes...there are concerns that people won't keep them after this is all over.

Kezi 9 news reporter julian minisohn explains.

(megan brezovar) "we've had a really hard time keeping dogs in our kennel.

They've been adopted at such high rates.

Our kittens have been adopted very quickly."

With people stuck at home -- more are looking to bring a furry friend into the family.

(megan brezovar) "we have really seen an uptick with public's interest in helping the animals in need, especially in a global pandemic."

Megan brezovaar of greenhill humae society says part of the reason is people have more time to take care of a pet.

(megan brezovar) "i do think this an opportunistic time to adopt knowing that they can kind of get their animal situated."

(julian mininsohn) one big concern is will people still be as committed to taking care of animal when we return back to normal, when they have less time at home.

It's something greenhill has had conversations about.

It's something they've planned for."

Such as the application process.

Those interested in animal adoption now have to schedule an appointment with an idea of the animal they're looking for.

Brezovar says it'll reinforce that adoption is a longterm decision.

(megan brezovar) "i think this process does enable people to have to think more seriously about their decision as they have to kind of process it before they walk in the door."

Brezovar also says foster home applications are through the roof.

(megan brezovar) "those people have thought maybe i can't take a forever animal home but i can take a temporary animal home, the outpouring has been inspirational."

Greenhill is also accepting dog or cat food donations for those in need during this time.
