The initiative is apart of the COVID-19 Surveillance in Oregon program, which is lead by the Oregon Health Authority.

Mercy medical center in roseburg began testing random emergency room patients for coronavirus this week.

The initative is part of the "covid-19 surveillance in oregon" program, through the oregon health authority.

Mercy medical is one of two southern oregon hospitals selected for the program.

The goal is to gather information about covid-19 cases in the state as quick as possible.

Every week, employees will collect tests from 15 random patients who are in the e.r.

For something unrelated to covid-19.

That still being worked out, how we collect it?

Staff say the test is completely voluntary and free of charge.

Any postive test results will be reported to the douglas public health network for follow up and contract tracing.
