To continue ve had covid-19.

Today newswatch 12's alicia rubin spoke with a local doctor about this new mutation.

Alicia says: "just like covid-19, this mutation is rare but unlike covid-19, this new condition seems to only affect children."

Around 100 children in new york city have been hospitalized with a new infammatory disease -- doctors think covid-19 could be what's triggering it.

Grant says: "it's not the covid-19 that's causing this directly but it's an immune response that's triggered by covid-19" children have a more robust immune system than adults, which is why they haven't been as vulnerable to covid-19 ábut its also why they could be more vulnerable to this inflamatory disease.

This new disease looks similar to kawasaki disease, which can be triggered by other coronaviruses and causes blood vessels in the heart to become inflamed, damaged, and can lead to aneurysms áábut this new virus has some unique traits that differ from kawasaki disease.

Grant says: "it seems to have a component to it of hypertension so it's almost like a toxic shock syndrome" kawasaki disease usually affects children younger than 5 but this new disease is affecting children between the ages of 5 and 14.

Grant says: "these kids come in high fevers they have this vasculitis inflammation affecting multiple organs and they have this low blood pressure hypertension" this condition is extremely rare -- doctors are continuing to learn more about it as more cases emerge.

Alicia says: "while there have been children in our area that have tested positive for covid-19, none of them have reported this new disease at this time.

Reporting from home, alicia rubin, newswatch 12."
