Is possible for recovery cafe lafayette.

Like many local organizations, it was forced to close its facility due to covid-19.

Now it's reopening with new safety restrictions.

News 18's micah upshaw tells us what this means for the community it serves.

:21 1:30 nat: i think what makes the cafe special is that it is designed, it is built to bring people in.

M: the core of recovery cafe lafayette relies on connecting people in need.

When covid-19 hit tippecanoe county, it made that mission much harder.

R: we really felt for our membership because, all of the sudden, all of their supports were ripped away and it wasn't because of anyone's fault it's just a pandemic.

M: recovery cafe is run by peer recovery coaches who lead talking sessions with those who attend.

Their target members are those on a road toward recovering.

R: homelessness, mental health, substance use, trauma, systemic racism, all of those things are challenges and we're here to support.

M: members can also come to hang out, play games, and have a meal.

Cafe manager rebecca (mass- lane-kuh) says she's happy they're able to provide their services in person again.

R: i am just excited to have our members back in more regularly to be able to share organically with each other and have that dynamic flow that they have.

Anyone who comes through the door, that's new, is greeted by an awesome group of folks who want them to be here and care about them.

M: one of those folks is alvina laforge, she is a certified peer recovery coach also on her own journey toward long-term recovery.

As someone who once sat on the other side of the table, she knows how in-person connection is key.

A: my recovery was connection, i had to connect with people because i know what it's like to be isolated so then when the whole covid hit, you know, that was all we were doing so now that we actually get to meet face to face it's exciting.

M: the new safety- restrictions include required masks and social- distancing.

Leaders have also switched from providing hot meals to pre- packaged food.
