Get Fit Friday 09/11/20 - Tabata Yoga

The ladies of the Fitness Factor introduce us to a crossover workout trend called Tabata Yoga.

Whitney brown: good morning and welcome to get fit friday.

I'm whitney brown here with beth jeffers and we're at the fitness factor in columbus talking about, something that some people don't necessarily think about when they think about going to a gym, is yoga.

Nowadays you've got people that practice yoga.

Beth jeffers: right.

Whitney brown: exclusively.

Beth jeffers: in a studio.

Whitney brown: right, in a studio.

Then you've got people that maybe just like higher intensity workouts or just other things.

Right?

They're not necessarily crossing over as much as perhaps they used to.

But the nice thing is, you can.

You can do yoga if you're a gym person.

We're going to talk a little bit about that today and how we've changed some yoga protocols to fit what our gym rats, right?

Beth jeffers: right.

Whitney brown: people that aren't necessarily great at yoga can do, and great beginning and intermediate levels for them.

Why don't you talk about a class that you teach a lot and we're going to see some footage from that class in fact today.

Beth jeffers: well, this is called tabata yoga and it was developed for, basically, like you said, the gym rat.

In reality, somebody that's good at yoga, that's very flexible and loves, loves, loves yoga.

That's great.

They usually have a tendency to be drawn to a yoga studio.

Whitney brown: right.

Beth jeffers: somebody that loves to do burpees and run and jump, isn't usually drawn to- whitney brown: no.

Beth jeffers: but you need both.

Whitney brown: right.

Beth jeffers: you need to kind of find that balance.

Whitney brown: mm-hmm .

Beth jeffers: we talked about balance last week.

We put together a class that's called tabata yoga.

What you're doing, we've had tabata classes, which is high intensity.

It's a style of a workout where you work for 20 seconds.

In yoga, you would hold the pose for 20 seconds.

Whitney brown: which is a lot longer than it seems. beth jeffers: yes.

Whitney brown: 20 seconds doesn't sound long, but- beth jeffers: but it's not as long as a traditional yoga class.

Whitney brown: that's true.

That's true.

Beth jeffers: for sure.

Trust me.

Beth jeffers: then you have 10 seconds off and then you rotate to another pose.

It flows from pose to pose.

You have a little break and then you continue on.

Whitney brown: right.

Beth jeffers: you do eight rounds of that, and then we usually end our class with relaxation.

Whitney brown: right.

Beth jeffers: we try to keep the classes more beginner level because usually it's people that don't want to have any kind of wild, crazy inversion or anything.

Whitney brown: right.

Mm-hmm .

Beth jeffers: it's kind of a fun way to do it.

We've had a lot of great feedback from it.

Whitney brown: right.

Beth jeffers: i don't think you should just take yoga out and think that you can't do it, because you can do yoga.

Whitney brown: one thing i think is interesting, and at least for me personally i like about tabata yoga, is that i like things to be quick.

Beth jeffers: right.

Whitney brown: i don't know if i have add or something's going on, but i like to change a lot and tabata yoga gives you that option.

You're changing poses more frequently than you do in a traditional yoga class.

Beth jeffers: traditional class.

Whitney brown: it allows you to kind of merge the two things together, from that high-intensity timing that we do a lot of and the yoga poses i think can give you great benefits.

It's also a great stepping stone to start yoga practice.

Beth jeffers: how about that on your list of things to do this week?

We'll see you next week on get fit friday.
