A river turned into a raging torrent after heavy rain in the Philippines.

Footage shows mud and debris being washed away by the Balangasan River near the town of Balangasan in Pagadian City, yesterday afternoon (September 13).

Shocked resident JM Bilvilone Rabe, said that he was nervous when he saw the floods outside his home.

He immediately went to his mother's house to check she was safe as the rain had still not relented.

He said: "It looked so dreadful and I was so worried what would happen as the rain continued to pour.'' Meanwhile, another local named Cielo Marriz Tura said that she was in her friend's house when she saw the river rising outside the house.

She said that it was her first time to see a strong current and said she could feel rocks smashing onto the river banks outside the home.

Cielo said: "I felt like my friend's house was about to be washed away.

I was saddened when I heard that they were used to the heavy rain and they had no choice but to endure it.'' The Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia, such as Thailand and Malaysia, are currently at the peak of the annual monsoon rainy season with regular tropical storms and flash floods.
