Ten hectares of rice crops were destroyed after tropical storm Leon brought heavy downpours which turned fields into a sea of floodwater.

Government worker John Mark Bercasio Barri was caught in the deluge when he went to the the Kapaya town of Sultan Kudarat, the Philippines for a statistical research with his colleagues.

It was raining in the city, but they did not expect that the remote towns were already submerged from the heavy rain.

He said: "I felt sorry for the owners of the paddy fields.

The rice was about to be harvested a few weeks from now but it was all gone now." Some motorcycle riders were seen braving the bad weather to buy supplies in the market, while a water buffalo was taken by its owner to a higher ground after the heavy rain.

Residents were also stranded in their homes as the roads were deep under two-metres of flood and violent currents.

Tropical storm Leon has left the Philippines on September 17 and is expected to make landfall in Vietnam September 18.
