The city of milledgeville announced some big changes coming to halloween this year.

41nbc's peyton lewis has more on how local traditions may have to change in 2020.

0:06-0:10 0:11-0:16 0:48-0:55 0:58-1:01 "it's sad all the way around, and i wish things could have been different, but we can't change it."

Meet shanice sanford, a mom of 2 who says her kids love halloween.

"last year my boys they were, i want to say one of them was batman and the other one was a ninja and i was some kind of character i had seen on tv, but they had fun last year and we went everywhere last year."

Although halloween is a fun time of year for many, it's going to be very different this year.

"this year with coronavirus we're following the cdc recommendations and guidelines and discouraging any sort of door to door trick or treating and in order to do that we need to lead by example."

Walter reynolds, milledgeville's district 4 councilman, says the usual festivities the city hosts is not happening.

"of course the city would normally do door to door trick or treating at the police department, fire department, all of those different city offices, because it's just not safe this year."

*standup* city officials are encouraging people to trade their candy collecting buckets for things you can do at home instead, like carving pumpkins.

Milledgeville says they're not trying to take the fun out of halloween, they just want residents to stay safe and protect each other from possibly spreading covid-19.

Sanford says although her sons will be upset they can't trick or treat around town, she's still going to make things fun for them.

"it'll work itself through, unfortunately we live in a kind of hard time right now but if you stay positive and think outside the box, anything can happen."
