The Honor Flight of Southern Indiana is thanking veterans in a new way after the pandemic grounded trips to D.C.

This year.

The honor flight of southern indiana -- is gathering the troops this week --- to put together a special project.

The undertaking will impact a thousand tri- state veterans across more than two dozen counties.

From snacks and candy -- to warm scarves and masks.

Alone these seem like every day items -- but packaged together in these red bags -- they send a message.

"it is going to bring smiles and tears."

To a thousand tri-state veterans - stuck at home-- during this pandemic.

"just happiness and joy to know that somebody still cares.

That's what it is all about."

When both flights were wiped off the calendar - this year -- diane shaw knew honor flight of southern indiana needed to do something to remind the men and women who served this county*our neighbors -- that they weren't forgotten.

"we also weren't able to have our veterans day luncheon where we bring back all of our alumni veterans.

It was kind of like a big wammie."

So instead of touring the war monuments in d-c -- and opening mail call on the flight home -- a network of volunteers will be touring 24 counties -this november delivering the care packages letters of thanks.

For debbie ward -- who took the trip with her father 5-years ago and has answered the call ever since -- this connection -- is the foundation of honor flight.

"very important.

I think all the veterans just appreciate, they are amazed by the outpouring of love and support that the community gives them."

And a huge undertaking like this -- needs an army -- "kids from pre-school to high school that have supported this: to businesses, families, everybody, thank you.

You are making a difference in a veterans life."

What a thoughtful project.

It really is -- and diane shaw -- who you just heard from -- has spent months putting this together -- she is just amazing.

And you actually helped pack some of those bags - this morning.

I did --- if you would like to help deliver the packages -- they
